Description
The definition of Shared Arctic Variables (SAVs) is an important component of the efforts in Arctic PASSION to advance Arctic observation and data systems. This report outlines the process that has been piloted for three themes – Permafrost, Wildfires and Sea Ice – and guided by the ROADS (Roadmap for Arctic Observing and Data Systems) process developed by the Sustaining Arctic Observing Networks (SAON). The SAV definition emphasizes shared ownership of these variables across scientific, Indigenous and Arctic communities, as well as relevance at local, regional and global scales. Inclusivity and engagement with all Arctic rights holders and stakeholders is at the heart of this process. A collaborative approach in defining SAVs aims to ensure that future Arctic observation systems meet the needs of all and contribute to the broader goal of a sustainable and resilient Arctic in the future.
In addition to the first SAVs proposed as an outcome of this work, the efforts described in this report have contributed to the general framework of the SAV definition process. The outcomes of this work are expected to offer significant societal benefits through improving the monitoring and prediction of Arctic changes, and the inclusion of Indigenous Knowledge and community needs ensures that the framework addresses both local and global interests. The definition of SAVs also provides resources for international collaboration and Arctic governance through standardization of observing strategies across borders. This report summarizes the SAV definition process and outcomes from the efforts piloting this process.
