SpongeScapes Comic - Floods and Droughts: A Water Balancing Act
Description
This comic was developed within the Horizon Europe project SpongeScapes to communicate the scientific work of PhD researcher Christopher Wittmann, who studies the hydrological trade-offs between flood and drought mitigation. Through the lens of a hybrid surface and groundwater model applied to the Chaamse Beken catchment in the Netherlands, the comic highlights how nature-based solutions, such as removing agricultural drains, can sometimes create unexpected side effects.
Combining visuals and storytelling, the comic raises awareness of the complexity of water balancing and landscape resilience under climate change.
