LAMASUS NUTS-level agricultural land rents

This dataset provides harmonised estimates of agricultural land rents across the European Union, derived from the Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN) and aggregated to the NUTS 0 (national) and NUTS 2 (regional) levels. The data are expressed in EUR per hectare and represent average land rental values for agricultural holdings reporting rental payments under the FADN survey framework.

Methodology

The estimates are based on the FADN standard results variable SE375 (Rent paid), complemented with related economic indicators to ensure internal consistency:

• SE030: Total output
• SE446: Total utilised agricultural area (UAA, ha)
• SE025: Total labour input (Annual Work Units, AWU)
• nr_farms: Number of holdings represented in the regional sample

Land rents were computed as average values per hectare of utilised agricultural area, weighted by the FADN expansion factors to represent the total farm population within each region and year. Data were extracted from the public FADN database, harmonised to 2016 NUTS boundaries, and checked for internal consistency between years.

Only regions with at least 15 farms contributing to the aggregated indicator were retained to ensure statistical confidentiality.

File description

The dataset contains two CSV files corresponding to two territorial aggregation levels (NUTS 2016 classification).

Each file contains the following columns:

1. NUTS0 / NUTS2 – NUTS (2016) regional code
2. year – Year of observation
3. SE375 – Rent paid (EUR)
4. SE030 – Total output (EUR)
5. SE446 – Utilised agricultural area (ha)
6. SE025 – Total labour input (AWU)
7. nr_farms – Number of farms represented
8. rent – Average rent per hectare (EUR/ha)
9. value – Weighted average land rent per hectare (EUR/ha)

Geographical, temporal and thematic coverage

• Geographical coverage: EU Member States and associated regions (mainland only), harmonised to 2016 NUTS definitions.
• Temporal coverage: Annual data, 1990–2020, covering the period for which FADN regional standard results are consistently available.
• Thematic coverage: Agricultural land rents and related farm income indicators at regional level, expressed in 2020 Euro.

Data processing

Values were taken from the FADN standard results database, validated, and mapped to NUTS 2 and NUTS 0 regions. National-level aggregates were calculated as the area-weighted mean of regional values. Monetary variables were deflated and expressed in 2020 Euro to ensure comparability over time, using Eurostat agricultural price indices.

FADN disclaimer

All information is based on aggregated data from the EU Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN) Public Database. Data are available only for regions and farm types with information from at least 15 observations at these regional units. No individual farm data are disclosed, and confidentiality rules are fully respected.
