Description

Data for the EarthSense scientific web app.

Here is a collection of some of the data produced during the PhD study of Dr. Michael Stamatis, to be used by EarthSense (https://github.com/mixstam1821/EarthSense). This PhD study was made interactive through this free and open-source interactive web app

For a detailed description, please see my Thesis: Detailed assessment of the global dimming and brightening of the Earth under all-sky and clear sky conditions using modern tools and long-term climate data. https://www.didaktorika.gr/eadd/handle/10442/59941

1) Download the EarthSense https://github.com/mixstam1821/EarthSense and follow the instructions to install the app.

2) Download and place the data (10 files) inside the EarthSense/data/ directory.

The data:

FMCX_8418_SurfaceDown_f.nc

The surface solar radiation (SSR) output of the FORTH-RTM utilised by clouds from the synergy of ISCCP-H and CLARA A2.1 (CLARISC cloud database), and aerosols and meteorology from MERRA-2. This data has been used in the following peer-reviewed publications:

__anom_8418_slopes_FMCX8418_SurfaceDown_.nc

The FORTH-RTM SSR changes are computed by the Theil-Sen slope. This data has been used in the following peer-reviewed publications:

FMCX_8418_drivers_we1.nc

contributions_all_1984-2018_.nc

Based on sensitivity tests, the drives of the SSR changes (or GDB) are calculated. (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.atmosres.2025.108140)

FMCX_8418_impac1.nc

Links between FORTH-RTM SSR and other climate variables from ERA5 reanalysis. (https://doi.org/10.1007/s10584-024-03810-6)

forth_361x576_land_see_mask.nc

Land-Sea mask based on the ISCCP-H land sea mask.

The 4  .txt files are produced for the evaluation of FORTH-RTM SSR against the GEBA ground-based network (https://iacweb.ethz.ch/doc/publications/Wild_etal_GEBA_ESSD2017.pdf). Global dimming and brightening research at ETH Zürich got support from a sequence of Swiss National Science Foundation Grants (Grant Nos. 200021_135395, 200020_159938, 200020_188601). GEBA is co-funded by the Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology MeteoSwiss within the framework of GCOS Switzerland.
