ABSTRACT

This paper aims to perform a competitiveness assessment of solar systems with energy storage, by comparing three power plant configurations: parabolic trough solar field using molten salts with thermal energy storage (PTPP), photovoltaic solar field with thermal energy storage (PV-TS) and photovoltaic solar field with lithium ion electrochemical energy storage (PV-BESS). The analysis is based on the annual performance of the simulated power plants with different sizing parameters (solar multiple and number of equivalent full load hours of storage). The simulations are performed with TRNSYS 17 software with hour resolution, backed by python routines to handle the parametric variations. Several locations from the CIES countries  were considered  (with different DNI, Ghi and latitude). The results exhibit the best configuration (in terms of LCOE competitiveness) for each location as a function of capacity factor making use of maps for the competitiveness of indicated regions.
