Description

This Annex to EOSC EDEN deliverable D2.1 presents the main scenarios, services and requirements for interoperability and exchange of Archival Information Packages (AIPs) in the EOSC EDEN project.

The scenarios for interoperability and exchange of APIs covered in this Annex include: the transfer of AIPs when custody and responsibility for their care is transferred between repositories and archives; replication of AIPs across multiple archives or storage services as part of business continuity and disaster recovery; and the ability to send AIPs in whole or in part to third-party LTDP services so that preservation actions can be applied to their contents.

This Annex presents some of the current challenges for AIP interoperability and exchange, which include: a lack of well defined machine-readable semantics for AIP content; a diverse range of formats and specifications used for AIP implementation; a lack of consistent approach to implementing the OAIS Information Model for AIPs; and a lack of a well defined mechanism for exchanging AIPs between organisations and systems.

These challenges are addressed through a proposed solution for AIP interoperability and exchange in EOSC EDEN.  This includes: the scenarios, considerations and aspects that characterise a workable solution; a set of AIP interoperability and exchange services and the requirements that they need to meet; and the next steps for work that will happen in EOSC EDEN, in particular producing detailed service specifications and implementation.
