Description

Results of the WorldView-2 (WV2) panchromatic and multispectral data analysis, described in Bradtke K., Brodziński W., Herman A., 2025: "Signatures of Breaking Waves in a Coastal Polynya Covered with Frazil Ice: A High-Resolution Satellite Image Case Study of Terra Nova Bay Polynya", Remote Sensing. The image, covering four analyzed subareas of the Terra Nova Bay Polynya (TNBP), was acquired on September 19, 2019 at 21:22 UTC. The spatial resolution of the source data is 0.5 m for the panchromatic band and 2 m for the multispectral bands.

The zip file contains:

  1.  “AOI” - folder with the outlines of the analyzed subareas in SHAPEFILE format.
  2.  "algorithm_scenarios" - folder with breaking wave signatures (polygons) in SHAPEFILE format, derived using different versions of the algorithm.
  3. “whitecaps” - folder with breaking wave signatures (polygons) in SHAPEFILE format, derived using the optimal version of the algorithm (noise reduction, DF as contrast index, threshold = 3.0).
  4. "whitecaps_fraction" - folder with rasters in GeoTIFF format, containing whitecap coverage calculated for 200 x 200 m pixels (NODATA = -100), and a text file with whitecap coverage, ice concentration and weend speed data extracted from rasters and auxiliary input data.

Folder and filenames include the following information:

  • WV2 - data source (WorldView-2)
  • 20190919 - image acquisition date
  • PAN / NIR1 / NIR2 - panchromatic or near-infrared bands used as input
  • Ca / Cb / N / S - subarea identifier
  • DF / HGC - alternatives contrast indices (DF - directional filter; HGC - Haralick general curvature)
  • fBI / fNO - preprocessing step: bilateral filtering (noise reduction) / no noise reduction
  • ## - threshold x 10 for contrasted object selection ("algorithm_scenarios" files)
  • WC - outlines of potentially breaking crests
  • W - whitecap coverage

Attribute names indicate:

  • WC_Area / Shape_Area - area of an individual polygon (potentially breaking crest)
  • WC_orienta - orientation of an individual polygon (0 = orientation to the North)
  • X, Y - map coordinates (EPSG:32758)
  • W - whitecap coverage (-)
  • A - ice concentration (-)
  • U10 - weend speed (m/s)

All data are provided in WGS 1984 / UTM Zone 58S projection (EPSG:32758)
