Description

This dataset contains the surface height topographies used in the numerical simulations and theoretical analysis presented in:

  • Surface separation in elastoplastic contacts (Almqvist & Persson, 2025, arXiv:2507.14054)

  • Multiscale contact mechanics for elastoplastic contacts (Almqvist & Persson, 2025, arXiv:2508.15492)

The surfaces are provided as xyz triplets describing the topography of self-affine fractal rough surfaces. Several topographies of different system sizes were generated (e.g., 2048-8, 4096-16, 8192-32), characterized by the ratio of the highest to lowest wavenumber (2048, 4096, 8192) and by the width of the high-wavenumber cut-off region (8, 16, 32).

These data served as input to boundary element method (BEM) simulations of frictionless contact between a rigid flat and an elastic–perfectly plastic half-space, exhibiting the roughness defined by the present height maps. The simulations assumed Young’s modulus: 250 GPa, Poisson’s ratio: 0, and Penetration hardness: 150 GPa.

The dataset enables reproduction of the results presented in the manuscripts.
