The Role of ChatGPT in Shaping Indonesian Students' Strategies for Mandarin Assignments: A TAM-Based Analysis

With the rapid advancement and accessibility of AI tools like ChatGPT, students increasingly rely on these technologies to enhance their foreign language learning or to assist with completing language tasks. This shift raises important questions about how AI influences students’ perceptions of ChatGPT in developing and supporting their Mandarin language learning. This study aims to investigate how students incorporate AI tools, particularly ChatGPT, into their learning process, whether to enhance their language skills or to facilitate task completion for better grades.
A quantitative descriptive approach was adopted, using a questionnaire as the main instrument. 68 students majoring in Chinese language who had experience using ChatGPT in language learning participated in this study.
The theoretical framework used is the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), examining students’ perceptions of AI’s perceived usefulness and ease of use, as well as the correlations with attitude toward use, behavioural intention, perceived enjoyment, social influence, and self-efficacy.
The findings reveal that ChatGPT is perceived not only as a practical and effective tool for supporting Mandarin learning but also as a motivating and accessible learning companion. These insights suggest that, for AI technologies to be meaningfully integrated into language learning, educational settings must support both technical usability and students' emotional needs.
