Description

Strategic Risk Management and Organizational Adaptation in National Security: Leveraging Artificial Intelligence in Times of Global Instability

In today’s characteristically unstable era, marked by heightened volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity (VUCA), national security has become an increasingly intricate domain that demands innovative, contemporary approaches. This article examines the importance of integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into national security strategies, particularly for enhancing adaptability and managing risk. Countries that harness AI’s capabilities for risk management are better equipped to address the myriad challenges posed by global instability and can respond to them promptly and effectively.

Amid complex geopolitical dynamics, globalisation and the persistence of hybrid and active warfare, the nexus between national security and economic stability has acquired unprecedented significance alongside the growing importance of AI methodologies in achieving it. This paper examines national security in times of instability and proposes an AI-enabled adaptation and risk-management strategy based on an economic–mathematical model. Our study highlights how economic vulnerability can compromise national security and how strategic economic policy can enhance security measures, as well as how AI capabilities should be tailored for effective risk management.

The research highlights innovative avenues for integrating economic and security policy through proactive economic diversification, investment in critical infrastructure and the cultivation of strategic international partnerships. Data from the G7 nations, Ukraine, Israel, Iran and Syria over the past fifteen years were analysed, and an economic–mathematical model of AI’s impact on national security was constructed. This model underpins the strategy “National Security in Conditions of Instability: Adaptation and Risk Management Using AI”, enabling a holistic approach that views economic viability as a fundamental component of national resilience.
