POPE monthly emissions for ICON-ART PRIEST v1.0

  • 1. ROR icon Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon

Description

This dataset provides monthly gridded atmospheric emissions for two PFCAs (PFOA and PFNA) and their precursor compounds (8:2-FTOH, 8:2-FTO, and 8:2-FTI) covering 1950 – 2019. It is derived from the annual 0.5° × 0.5° POPE inventory v2.0 (Simon et al., 2024) and has been prepared as emissions for the chemistry‑transport model ICON‑ART PRIEST V1.0.

Processing:

  • Temporal interpolation: Annual total emission ratios for every grid cell and substance were linearly interpolated to monthly values, considering yearly totals are exactly conserved.
  • Horizontal remapping: Conservatively remapped using cdo "remapcon" from the native 0.5° squared grid to the ICON R3B4 icosahedral grid used in ICON-ART PRIEST.
  • Precursor species derivation: Two precursor species absent from the native POPE inventory; 8:2 fluorotelomer olefin (8:2 FTO) and 8:2 fluorotelomer iodide (8:2 FTI) are introduced following the split factors of Thackray et al. (2020 (48 % 8:2 FTOH, 48 % 8:2 FTO, 4 % 8:2 FTI).
