The moderating role of self-control on the relationship between opportunity, job pressure and employee deviance

Description

This study examines self-control as a moderator in the relationships amongst the dimensions of opportunity (institutional policy and ethical climate), job pressure (excessive workload and job pressure), and deviant workplace behaviour (interpersonal and organizational deviance) among lecturers. The study employed survey instruments to obtain data from faculty members in Nigerian public universities. More so, variance-based structural equation modeling was employed to run analysis on 536 questionnaires filled by faculty members in public universities in Nigeria. Statistical results indicate that self-control significantly moderates the relationship between ethical climate and interpersonal deviance. Also, self-control moderates the relationship between workload and organizational deviance as well as the relationship between workload and interpersonal deviance.
