Final Platforms and Networks solutions integration and deployments

Description
TrialsNet WP2 focused on the design, development, and deployment of advanced platform and network solutions supporting large-scale 5G and B5G trials across multiple European clusters. These infrastructures serve as the technological backbone, enabling the execution of a diverse set of trials in the three domains addressed by the project, such as i) Infrastructure, Transportation, Security & Safety, ii) eHealth & Emergency, and iii) Culture, Tourism & Entertainment.
WP2 has been responsible for translating the functional requirements of the use cases (defined in WP3, WP4, and WP5) into integrated and secure infrastructure deployments capable of operating under realistic conditions. It is important to remark that WP2 also carried out activities that were not initially foreseen, such as the activities on sustainability and the deployment of mmWave solutions to support the most demanding use cases. In addition, WP2 has worked closely with WP6 to define relevant KPIs and to ensure measurable performance tracking during trials. Based on this consolidated framework, the large-scale validation activities described in this deliverable highlight the technical readiness of the platform and network components, as well as their ability to support heterogeneous and demanding vertical applications. Through extensive field trials in the four clusters located in Italy (which encompasses two sites in Turin and Pisa, respectively), Spain, Romania, and Greece, WP2 has consolidated the final design and implementation of end-to-end infrastructures, leveraging commercial-grade hardware and open-source components where applicable. This has included the deployment of standalone 5G infrastructures, advanced edge computing environments, and vertical-specific orchestration platforms, with strong attention to replicability and openness. The main achievements for each cluster are summarized in this document.
This deliverable also provides the final implementation of the TrialsNet’s Vertical and Horizontal innovations as well as the sustainability solutions that have been studied and introduced by WP2. While, on one side, the proposed innovations contribute to the infrastructure’s flexibility and capacity for scaling with new applications and features, on the other side, the sustainability solutions are going to be crucial for the success of future experiments and contribute to the long-term viability of the network. Besides the final development, the project also identified specific KPIs for each of the introduced solutions which measurements have been collected (both through simulations or real setups, depending on the context) and properly analyzed to validate their effectiveness.
Finally, the deliverable reports about the contribution to the standard provided by TrialsNet in the context of 3GPP activities towards the 6G definition. In particular, TIM, UC3M, and IMEC jointly collaborated to elaborate an input with the aim to emphasize the need for a sustainable achievement of relevant KPIs (which has been identified through the project’s trial activities) and proposing the Zero-touch Service Management (ZSM) framework as an enabler for achieving these. To further strength the impact and create synergies, TrialsNet also initiated a collaboration with the project ORIGAMI which help to a workshop in which common strategies and fay forward to contribute to the standard were finalized. As a result, TIM presented on behalf of TrialsNet a contribution to the 3GPP workshop on 6G held the 10-11th of March 2025 in Incheon aiming at identifying the main topics to be addressed in the definition of 6G by proposing integrated, scalable, and autonomous solutions for future mobile infrastructures.
