Description

Model overview

Model purpose

The ITOM-Cement computes cost-optimal transformation pathways of the production system of the Cement sector in a region (typically: EU 27+3) driven by an exogenously given demand from concrete uses and subject to constraints on emissions and resource availability as well as changing costs of energy and CO2 certificates.

Model concept

From a mathematical point of view, the ITOM framework is a linear optimization model (see technical documentation1) which optimizes the cost of the system over the whole time period, given certain equations and restrictions.

The model considers spatially distributed production sites that are allocated to regions (DE, FR, …) and their transport connections. The value chain is divided into a) clinker production from limestone and b) cement production from clinker and supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) such as ground blast furnace slag and calcined clays. A set of concrete applications is defined for which different subsets of all cement types included in the model can be used. The model features a rich technological basis for the production of clinker from limestone (including various carbon capture technologies) and allows flexible use of fuels for clinker production. It currently distinguishes 6 cement types and 4 types of concrete applications.

The driving requirement of the model is to satisfy an externally defined amount of cement demand from concrete applications per region while externally defined parameters such as energy costs and CO2 prices change over time. The model determines endogenously where and by which technology and by using what kind of energy the various (intermediate) products are produced in which model time period and region.

Key features

  • Spatially explicit representation of cement clinker sites in EU 27+3
  • Model endogenous optimization of production networks across sites and steps in the value chain (clinker, cement)
  • Detailed covering of carbon capture technologies
  • Endogenous choice of SCMs for cement production
  • Differentiation of cement types and their usability for concrete applications
