Review on the Formulation and Evaluation of Curcumin Gel
Description
Curcumin, a bioactive polyphenolic compound extracted from Curcuma longa (turmeric), has gained significant attention in recent years for its diverse therapeutic properties, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and anticancer activities. However, its clinical application is hindered by poor aqueous solubility, low stability in physiological conditions, and limited systemic bioavailability when administered orally. To overcome these challenges, topical drug delivery systems, especially gel formulations, have emerged as effective alternatives for local and site-specific delivery of curcumin. This review comprehensively discusses the rationale for curcumin gel formulation, selection of appropriate excipients, methods of preparation, evaluation parameters, and therapeutic applications. Emphasis is placed on improving drug stability, release behavior, and pharmacological efficacy. The review concludes that curcumin gel is a promising herbal formulation with potential use in treating various inflammatory, infectious, and dermatological conditions.
