Description

North Shewa District Altitude Web Map - Initial Release (v1.0.0)

Release Date: June 1, 2025

This initial release of the North Shewa District Altitude Web Map visualizes the elevation characteristics of districts within the North Shewa zone of the Amhara region in Ethiopia.

Purpose:

This web map was developed for a proposal focusing on altitude-related health issues in the North Shewa region. It aims to provide a spatial understanding of the elevation variations across different districts.

Key Features:

District Boundaries: Clearly delineates the administrative boundaries of the districts within North Shewa. Altitude Statistics: Each district is associated with its mean, median, minimum, and maximum altitude (in meters above sea level). Interactive Exploration: Clicking on any area within a district will display the mean, median, minimum, and maximum altitude for that specific district. Layer Manipulation: Users can interactively add or subtract map layers to customize the view. Dynamic Boundary Highlighting: The boundary of each district is highlighted in yellow as the cursor moves over it, facilitating easy identification.

Data Sources:

Administrative Boundaries: Sourced from the Humanitarian Data Exchange (HDX) Ethiopia subnational administrative boundaries, accessed on March 3rd, 2025. Elevation Data: Derived from Geodata at UC Davis, ETH ele.zip, accessed on March 5th, 2025.

Intended Audience:

Researchers studying the North Shewa region. Local government and administrative bodies. Individuals with a general interest in the geography of the Amhara region.

Known Limitations:

The altitude information provided for each district represents central tendencies (mean, median) and the overall range (minimum and maximum). It does not provide point-specific elevation data within the districts.

How to Use:

Simply navigate to the web map link provided in this repository. Use the layer controls to customize the displayed information. Click within any district on the map to view its mean, median, minimum, and maximum altitude. Hover your cursor over the map to see the yellow highlight of the district boundaries.
