DETERMINANTS OF RESEARCH PRODUCTIVITY OF PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHERS IN ALABAT ISLAND, DIVISION OF QUEZON

Description

This study investigates the multifaceted factors influencing research productivity among public secondary school teachers on Alabat Island, Philippines, focusing on their demographic characteristics, research skills, and the level of support provided by the Department of Education (DepEd). Key findings reveal a predominantly regular staff teaching force with underrepresentation in school leadership positions, potentially limiting opportunities for collaborative research endeavors. The teachers' qualifications exhibit considerable variation, directly impacting their involvement in research activities. While possessing moderate foundational research skills, the teachers demonstrate surprisingly advanced capabilities in areas such as accurate citation, ethical considerations, and effective time management. However, the overall support received from DepEd presents a complex picture, characterized by a juxtaposition of supportive policies and significant concerns regarding insufficient budget allocation and inadequate research facilities. The study reveals a considerable gap between the teachers' potential and their actual research productivity, indicating a low frequency of research production, presentation, and publication. A statistically significant correlation was discovered between the number of research-related training sessions attended and overall research productivity, underscoring the critical role of professional development in enhancing research output. The study concludes that a concerted effort to enhance research training opportunities, establish robust mentorship programs, and significantly increase resource allocation is crucial for fostering a vibrant culture of inquiry and substantially boosting research output among educators on Alabat Island. By addressing these identified challenges, this research aims to inform the development of targeted interventions designed to promote greater research engagement, ultimately contributing to the professional growth of teachers and leading to demonstrable improvements in educational practices not only within Alabat Island but also across the broader Division of Quezon. The findings strongly emphasize the urgent need for systematic support and adequate resources to cultivate a thriving research environment within schools, a crucial element in enhancing the overall quality of education and maximizing teacher effectiveness.
