Description
The 25th International Sea Surface Temperature (SST) Users' Symposium and GHRSST Science Team Meeting (GHRSST25) convened from June 10 to 14, 2024, in Montreal, Canada co-hosted by Environment and Climate Change Canada and the University of Quebec Montreal. GHRSST25 brought together SST scientists, data producers and operational users.
The symposium featured six focused sessions addressing critical challenges and innovations in SST research:
Coupled Data Assimilation: Progress in integrating SST data into coupled ocean-atmosphere models to enhance forecasting accuracy was explored, with a keynote by Mark Buehner (ECCC).
Climate Change and Variability in Global and Regional SST: Cristina González-Haro (Institut de Ciències del Mar) highlighted the effects of resolution on observed SST climatology and variability.
Challenging Regions: the Coastal Margin and the Arctic: Monitoring complexities in coastal and polar regions were addressed, with Youyu Lu (Fisheries and Oceans Canada) presenting on multi-scale temperature variations off Nova Scotia.
Calibration, Validation, and Product Assessment: Peter Minnett (University of Miami) discussed validation of two decades of MODIS skin SST retrievals to ensure data accuracy.
Advances in Computing and Products: Innovations in SST processing were showcased, including a deep learning approach to satellite bias correction by Garrett Graham (NOAA).
Applications and Observations: Practical SST applications in various sectors were discussed, including enhanced surface current monitoring and regional SST product calibration for the Canadian Atlantic.
Agencies and Task Teams reported to the GHRSST Science Team. Key contributions included advancements in high-resolution SST datasets, cloud-based data processing, and new satellite missions. Agencies highlighted progress in validation frameworks, development of Arctic and coastal SST products, and harmonisation of global datasets. Task Teams reported on ongoing efforts and their next steps for the year ahead.
Two workshops were held – focusing on the evolution of the GHRSST Data Specification and collaborations between GHRSST and CEOS-COAST. The GDS Evolution Workshop focused on refining the GHRSST Data Specification (GDS) towards versions 2.2 and 3.0, the workshop outlined improvements in editing processes and best practices for cloud-based data management. The CEOS-COAST Workshop emphasised collaboration between the Coastal and Ocean Applications Virtual Constellation (CEOS-COAST) and GHRSST, exploring synergies in high-resolution SST monitoring, addressing coastal challenges, and advancing satellite-based tools for applications such as fisheries, pollution tracking, and climate impact assessments.
Looking ahead, the 26th International SST Users' Symposium and GHRSST Science Team Meeting (GHRSST26) is scheduled to take place in Copenhagen, Denmark, from June 16 to 20, 2025, hosted by the Danish Meteorological Institute.
