The Open Science Learning Gate (GATE) is a transformative initiative paving the way for a brighter future through qualitative Open Science (education). It acts as a gateway to collaborate, observe, comprehend, and adjust to changes and innovations in the evolving Open Science field.
About the GATE
The GATE has been developed to meet the needs of 12 different target groups (see presentation p. 5-6) of the research process practicing Open Science by promoting quality-driven capacity building in the European Open Science community over time.
Multifaceted GATE features unfold a wealth of benefits for Open Science communities:
1. Engagement strategy for strong COMMUNITY BUILDING and PROMOTION
The GATE connects Open Science communities in education, practice, infrastructure, research, funding and policymaking, mobilises their interaction and adds value to existing initiatives by promoting their relevance, sustainable access, visibility & use of their up-to-date resources.
2. GATE Service for continuous enhancement of KNOWLEDGE on Open Science
The GATE Service is an infrastructure permanently incorporated into the Open Science landscape. It enables an ongoing community-based data collection and knowledge exchange on Open Science (education).
Insight into the GATE's highly informative knowledge collection via research communities: In the rapidly evolving landscape of (Open) Science, GATE gathers (1) general information about OS guiding thoughts and practices and (2) focuses on the intersection of (Open) Science and Artificial Intelligence. The insights derived from this effort create promising knowledge bases that benefit the entire community, from researchers to policymakers.
Via the GATE Service Creators of Open Science materials are asked to contribute their expertise on guiding thoughts (concepts, norms, processes, values etc. serving as a framework for reliable Open Science practice) implemented into their educational materials for specific target groups (see presentation p. 5-6). In turn, it reflects guiding thoughts suggested by others back to the creators and thus enhances their knowledge.
By continuing its data collection over the coming years, it will effectively capture the changing commons (approaches) within Open Science (education). The GATE serves as a mirror of the current state and progress of Open Science, providing valuable insights that contribute to ongoing research and inform policymaking in the field.
3. GATE Reports for Open Science CAPACITY BUILDING and continuous OPTIMISATION of resources
The expanding data collection on guiding thoughts and practices is subject to continuous evaluation by the GATE research team (see GATE’s first Research meeting). The annual GATE Reports are dynamic and insightful informative resources providing a comprehensive overview of current guiding thoughts and practices in Open Science over the upcoming years.
Thus, the GATE Reports (and website) facilitate knowledge sharing among communities, allowing them to embrace, modify, or distance themselves from the communicated developments, trends and disparities in Open Science.
(1) Creators of Open Science materials are encouraged to engage in continuous self-reflection on their educational materials, enabling refinement and optimisation of resources in accordance with current guiding thoughts and practices, thereby ensuring the sustainable usage of their updated resources even after the conclusion of projects. This contributes to the recognition of participating creators as authors of cutting-edge Open Science educational materials, as documented in the GATE Reports.
(2) Researchers and communities in education and practice, policymakers, infrastructure providers, and research funding organisations receive insights allowing them to keep themselves informed and respond effectively. They can enhance and continuously update their understanding, and thereby improve capacity building and decision-making on Open Science (see GATE’s report on first Community meeting).
The reports disseminate GATE’s findings regularly, with the first report expected early 2026.
4. PROMOTION, SUSTAINABILITY and CONTINUITY
The GATE advocates for and encourages FAIR outcomes and knowledge sharing. It acts as a node between Open Science communities and infrastructures, stimulating for open publishing and efficiently promoting participating resources connected to openly accessible repositories or listed appropriate catalogues thus enhancing their visibility even post-project.
Who is GATE's community?
The GATE is a valuable tool for various stakeholders.
1. Creators of Open Science material: Individuals defined as trainers and developers of material fostering Open Science, including lecturers at universities or data stewards at repositories. They are invited to submit their knowledge to the GATE Service and may utilise the GATE Report and website to access and contribute to a wealth of shared resources.
2. Research Communities: Researchers, Open Science community supporters, vice presidents, or other research community representatives at varying expertise levels in Open Science can use the GATE Reports continuously to expand their knowledge and connect with a community of practice. The GATE Reports allow for targeted open-access training, building capacities in line with the current state of the art of Open Science (education), and cultivating expertise among basic and experienced users.
3. Policymakers: Policymakers might use the GATE Reports to gauge the impact of evidence-based knowledge dissemination. The GATE Reports can support policy development by delivering updated and scientifically validated insights on Open Science.
4. Research Funding Organisations: For funders, the GATE Report is a valuable resource for gathering information necessary to enforce conditions for funding applications. It could serve as a benchmark guide for the implementation of Open Science in research projects, ensuring compliance and facilitating better funding practices. Furthermore, the entire GATE initiative promotes cost-effective funding investments by ensuring that existing capacities remain relevant and up-to-date through GATE’s optimisation incentives and the mapping of connections to repositories and catalogues.
5. Infrastructure providers: Professionals engaged with data infrastructures may find the GATE Report valuable as it promotes existing catalogues and repositories, enhances their visibility, and aligns a fluid exchange between regional, thematic, national and international infrastructures. GATE enhances the sharing of training resources, fosters collaboration in the data space sector, and may assist to align metadata models.
6. Research Corner: We collaborate with researchers interested in Open Science Research. Together with external experts, we develop the GATE Analyses and Reports and make the GATE Data available to other researchers. If you are working on related topics, would like to use the GATE data or join the GATE research initiative, we welcome your participation.
