Description
This report, part of the CULTIVATE project, investigates the costs and benefits of food sharing initiatives (FSIs) in Barcelona, Spain. The study aims to understand the economic, social, and environmental aspects of FSIs, which include growing and composting together, cooking and eating together, and redistributing surplus food. The research employs a Mobile Research Lab (MRL) approach, combining desktop research, online interviews, field research, and data analysis.
Barcelona hosts a diverse range of FSIs, driven by social entrepreneurship, community engagement, and innovative business models. These initiatives are deeply embedded in the city's social and solidarity economy, supported by favorable legislation and collaboration with public institutions. FSIs contribute significantly to social sustainability by improving food security, inclusivity, and community building. They also promote environmental sustainability by reducing food waste and enhancing urban biodiversity.
