Description

About this learning module:

Digitalization is a major trend that is also changing university teaching. Traditional face-to-face courses are increasingly being complemented by hybrid or fully online formats. This is the mindset with which "Research data management - an online introduction" was developed. The learning module can be used for self-study purposes, but the materials can also easily be integrated into existing on-site courses or be used in blended learning scenarios (such as flipped classroom etc.). Furthermore, it can be used as an online course to acquire microcredentials. The implementation on the common learning platforms Moodle and ILIAS supports a wide distribution.

The contents were created jointly by HeFDI and are similar in both files. However, they contain some local adaptations of the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences (Moodle) and the University of Marburg (ILIAS). This is true for links as well as texts or inserted videos for local services. As these services may not be available for members of your institution, we recommend to review and adjust the learning module after implementation. Instructions on how to implement it in your Moodle or ILIAS platform can be found in the Readme-File.

You can view the course in the version of the University of Marburg here: https://uni-marburg.de/5KjqCE
A German version of the course is also available at: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.6373596

Contents:

Introduction to RDM; the life cycle of research data; data management plans; metadata and metadata standards; FAIR principles and CARE principles; data quality; data organization; data storage and archiving; legal aspects of research data management.

Structure:

The individual chapters are all structured in a common way: Introduction and learning objectives -> Content -> Test questions -> References and further sources -> Handout. Furthermore, they have a modular design, which means they build on each other thematically, but can also be used/worked on individually.

Target groups:

The learning module is aimed at students, doctoral candidates and researchers who are looking for an initial, easy-to-understand introduction to research data management (RDM).

Technical remarks:

Two import files for a learning module on research data management are provided here for reuse. The import files are available for Moodle (version 4.1) and ILIAS (version 8.18). Compatibility with other versions may need to be checked.

Usage:

We would like to encourage you to reuse, modify and expand the learning module in all possible ways and adapt it to local conditions. In addition, we see it not only as an offer to be completed individually (aka. self-learning unit), but also in particular for the use in (curricular) teaching. Individual chapters or even the entire learning module can, for example, be worked through in an inverted classroom scenario before a course in order to then go into detail during class time. It is also possible to use the contents as a basis for more in-depth workshops (for example on subject-specific matters or for the actual creation of data management plans).
