Description
About these Presentations
The presentation were developed for a three-part Open Science for the OMICS Community Workshop Series, which Talarify created and DIPLOMICS hosted and supported.
The workshop series and supporting workbooks specifically focus on Open Science in the South African context. The three parts include:
-
Workshop 1: An Introduction To Open Science
-
Workshop 2: Open Science in the Omics Research Laboratory
-
Workshop 3: Open Science for Computational Omics Research
DIPLOMICS is a research infrastructure programme funded by the South African Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI). One of DIPLOMICS’ primary objectives is to support training for students and researchers in Omics, defined as the Sciences of Genomics, Proteomics, Metabolomics, and Bioinformatics.
Talarify is a South African consulting and training organisation specialising in capacity and community development in Open Science, Digital and Computational Research, and Interdisciplinarity.
How to Use the Presentations
The slides are supplemented by a comprehensive workbook, ESSENTIAL OPEN SCIENCE FOR SOUTH AFRICA, developed by the same authors.
The contents of the workbook were designed to be used:
-
as self-study material (in this case, we strongly recommend further reading using the reference materials);
-
as a workbook complementing the interactive workshops run by facilitators with experience in open science.
The workbook can be found at:
Van der Walt, A., Pawlik, A., & GROBBELAAR, M. (2025, January 27). Open Science Essentials for South Africa. Zenodo. https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.14745124

Expected Learning Outcomes
After working through this workbook, learners will be able to:
-
understand the concept of open science and its importance;
-
recognise various key open science concepts (terminology/vocabulary);
-
set up an account with ORCID and be able to use it;
-
understand the basics of open licenses;
-
understand the foundations of open-access publishing;
-
describe the processes of data sharing;
-
find useful open science resources, including tools, platforms, repositories, publications, communities, mentorship opportunities, and more;
-
know about open science policies and recommendations relevant to the South African research community and
-
have foundational knowledge, enabling them to attend a follow-up workshop to learn about applying open science principles in practice.
Funding
The South African Department of Science, Technology, and Innovation funded the development of this workbook through DIPLOMICS, a research infrastructure under the South African Research Infrastructure Roadmap initiative.
