Description
This task is complementary to eLTER PLUS Tasks 3.2 (eLTER PLUS contributions to strengthening the
functional nexus between remote sensing and in-situ observations) and 4.3 (Harvesting and
harmonizing of Remote Sensing products) and seeks to assess spatial and temporal accuracy of Earth
Observation (EO) products and services in relation to selected eLTER Standard Observations (SO)
measured in-situ. The task has been implemented as a pilot study including:
● Review of existing EO products & services (Copernicus, GEOSS, etc.) as potential proxies for
SO
● Identification of cross-domain SOs with widespread use across eLTER sites
● Prioritization of SO matching specific EO products and services
● Sites selection for pilot test according to available in-situ data
● Pilot implementation through developed tools in DataLabs and accuracy assessment including
upscaling methods
Task 4.4. has proceeded in parallel to Task 3.2. on strengthening the functional nexus between Earth
Observation and in-situ data from eLTER sites and platforms which can meet the requirements for
calibration and validation (cal/val) of Earth Observation products and services.
Both tasks have addressed the Copernicus in-situ component, led by EEA, defining a list of
requirements and a roadmap to facilitate eLTER RI future integration in Copernicus cal/val networks.
The task has also contributed to the RCs Biodiversity (Task 8.1 Biodiversity loss) and Socio-Ecology
(Task 4.5 LTSER pilot data provisioning – utilizing RI expertise for spatially-explicit socio-ecological data
provision to platforms) with the developed tools and the generated EO products.
