Description
Nowadays, research results are largely generated by self-developed software or code-based scripts. This code is regarded as an integral component of the scientist’s independent research. The FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable) have become widespread in recent years since their definition by Wilkinson et al. (2016), especially in the context of research data and its sustainable use. The FAIR availability of code, however, lags behind scientific publication and research data publication. It therefore makes sense to publish code FAIR, especially in the open access area, so that it can be found and reused in the scientific community on the one hand and its authors receive appropriate “credits” when it is reused on the other. This document is therefore intended to serve as a kind of roadmap for making FAIR code available. The measures presented should be seen as current recommendations (as at the beginning of 2025). Things are changing
rapidly in this field, and it is questionable which methods/tools/etc. will become standards in the future and which will not be pursued further due to a lack of support from the community.
Abstract (German)
Forschungsergebnisse werden heutzutage im großen Maße durch selbstentwickelte Software bzw. codebasierte Skripte (im folgenden vereinfacht als Code bezeichnet) generiert. Dabei wird dieser Code als Teil der eigenen Forschung betrachtet. Die FAIR-Prinzipien FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) haben sich in den vergangenen Jahren seit ihrer Definition durch Wilkinson et al. (2016), v.a. im Zusammenhang mit Forschungsdaten und deren nachhaltiger Nutzung, weit verbreitet. Die FAIRe Verfügbarmachung von Code hinkt, im Vergleich zur wissenschaftlichen Veröffentlichung und zur Forschungsdatenpublikation hinterher. Es liegt also nahe, gerade im Open Access Bereich, auch Code FAIR zu veröffentlichen, damit er in der wissenschaftlichen Community einerseits auffindbar, sowie wiederverwendbar ist und andererseits seine Urheber:innen entstprechende „Credits“ bei Wiederverwendung bekommen. Das vorliegende Dokument soll daher als eine Art Fahrplan zur FAIRen Verfügbarmachung von Code dienen. Die vorgestellten Maßnahmen sind dabei als aktuelle Empfehlungen (Stand Anfang 2025) zu betrachten. Im betrachteten Thema ändern sich Dinge gerade schnell und es ist fraglich, welche Methoden/ Tools/ etc. zukünftig zu Standards und welche aus mangelnder Unterstützung aus der Community nicht weiter verfolgt werden.
