Selection of the most appropriate depopulation method for the welfare of poultry
Creators
Description
This document provides a structured set of decision trees to guide the selection of the most appropriate depopulation method for poultry during Avian Influenza and similar outbreaks, with the main focus on prioritizing animal welfare. Each method is assessed based on the human, technical, and environmental resources required to ensure compliance with welfare standards, assuming all these necessary resources are available. Methods that minimize pain, distress, and suffering are ranked higher, regardless of resource feasibility in specific contexts. The top 3 methods in terms of welfare are: captive bolt stunning, lethal injections, and whole-house gassing. The decision trees are dynamic, designed as a "live" document to be updated as scientific knowledge and commercial technologies evolve. They are primarily aimed at the competent authorities of the EU Member states.
