Description

This dataset contains the raw simulation data employed in:

Bayón-Buján, B., Bello-Benítez, E., Zhou, J., & Merino, M. (2024). Data-driven analysis of anomalous transport and three-wave-coupling effects in E x B plasma discharges. arXiv preprint arXiv:2412.19789.

Which is currently submitted to the Journal of Electric Propulsion. The data was first used and analized in the paper:

Bello-Benítez, E., Marín-Cebrián, A., & Ahedo, E. (2024). Effect of injection conditions on the non-linear behavior of the ECDI and related turbulent transport. arXiv preprint arXiv:2405.08761.

Methods

The data comes from a full-PIC simulation of a collisionless plasma composed of hydrogen ions and electrons in a canonical annular E × B plasma discharge, representative of a Hall thruster channel. The simulation domain corresponds to the axial-azimuthal midchannel surface of the discharge, with axial injection of both species and periodic boundary conditions in the azimuthal direction.

The simulation settings aim to replicate essential aspects of the physics needed to trigger and sustain the Electron Cyclotron Drift Instability (ECDI), while excluding other factors like field inhomogeneities, ionization, and collisions.

Additional information about the simulation code and settings can be found in the article.

Technical info

The data file is in standard h5 format.

Contains the following arrays of dimensions (5001, 100, 51), corresponding to the temporal, azimuthal and axial dimensions.

"E_2" - the electric field component in the azimuthal direction (in V/m)

"f_1" - the axial electron flux (in m^-3 s^-1)

"n" - the electron density (in m^-3)

"phi" - the plasma potential (in V)

Additionally,

"time" - array of shape (5001), time snapshots (in s)

"x1" -array of shape (51), axial coordinate (in m)

"x2" -array of shape (100), azimuthal coordinate (in m)
