Description

Abstract

Background: Guava (Psidium guajava) is an important medicinal plant to exhibit antioxidant, hepatoprotective, anti-allergy, antimicrobial, antigenotoxic, antiplasmodial, cytotoxic, antispasmodic, cardioactive, anticough, antidiabetic, antiinflamatory and antinociceptive activities, supporting its traditional uses.
Aim: The aim of this research is to find a cure for bleeding gums and bad breath from guava leaves solvents.
Method: 320 patients were tested with crude extracts of guava leaves against the gum disease bacteria. In vitro antimicrobial activity was compared with three different solvent (ethanol, methanol and aqueous) extracts of guava leaves at concentrations of 50 mg/ml, 100 mg/ml and 150 mg/ml. The efficiency of these extracts was tested three bacteria (Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus sanguis and Fusobacterium).
Result: According to antibacterial test results, 100 mg/ml methanolic extract showed the highest inhibitory zones (14.34±1.67) against Streptococcus mutans while 100 mg/ml ethanolic extract showed the highest inhibitory zones (9.61±1.35) against Streptococcus sanguis. We also found that the methanolic extract was the most effective in curing gum bleeding and bad breath in both male and female.
Conclusion: Based on the current identification, guava leaves extract are effective in curing gum bleeding and bad breath.
