Underwater Reconfigurations: Towards Permaculture for Marine Species
Description
Diving into the vibrant bay of Valsaline, Pula, Croatia, we explore the challenges and possibilities of underwater environments, seeking to reconfigure permaculture of marine species. The bay's underwater life faces decline due to global warming seas and local urban planning. Responding to this, artificial reef experiments were initiated, yet results were unsatisfactory, highlighting the need for a deeper understanding of the bay. Combining sensing technology with embodied experiences, our research employs custommade underwater sensors that map conditions of marine environment to help identify optimal species and ecologies. To engage citizen and diver communities of the bay, we propose to develop a multispecies marine permaculture that emphasises biodiversity, regulatory functions and informational aspects over traditional food production. Our future goal is to redefine underwater management and design, offering a care-full and sustainable approach to marine ecosystem revitalization.
