Re.Nature Cities. Deliverable 4.3: Drag coefficient Database
Description
“Re.Nature Cities” project aims to evaluate via experimental and simulation means the ability of street trees as nature-based solution (NBS), to act as an effective measure against the consequences of climate change on the built environment. One of the main objectives of the project is to experimentally determine the drag coefficient of natural trees/shrubs with different geometric properties (height and width) and porosities. The natural trees/shrubs selected for the experimental study are representative Mediterranean deciduous and evergreen species i.e. Clementine, Magnolia, Oleander and Tilia . The aerodynamic forces were measured in the NTUA wind tunnel section for these four different trees for the same velocity range. For repeatability and sensitivity analysis purposes, three different samples of each tree/shrub were tested at two different orientations (0 and 90 degrees) with respect to the direction of the wind flow. For the same trees samples, measurements of Leaf Area Density and Leaf Mass per Area have been also performed.
The research project is implemented in the framework of H.F.R.I call “Basic research Financing (Horizontal support of all Sciences)” under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan “Greece 2.0” funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU (H.F.R.I. Project Number: 15566) (2/10/2023-01/10/2025)
