Abstract: The AtlanticWater (AW) plays a key role regarding the future changes in the Arctic ocean, as it transports salt and heat within the Arctic Ocean basins. The recent increase in poleward ocean heat transport is not always well-captured by climate models which struggle with the complex interplay between ocean dynamics and the topography and bathymetry of this region. Herewe try to constrain 12 CMIP6 models by selecting model members with realistic mean-state and trend in the Subpolar Gyre surface temperature using a recent index (AMOC-SST). The members selected display a shallower, less biassed Atlantic Water core temperature in the Arctic Ocean. Overall, the AMOC-based selection leads to a systematic improvement of the representation of the deepwater temperature in the Arctic region.
