Abstract
Background: This study aimed to better understand the main strengths and inefficiencies of cleft orthodontic care within Bangladesh. This study aimed to describe the current provider characteristics, orthodontic appliances, services offered, orthodontic complications, and cost analysis of cleft treatment in Bangladesh. There is little published regarding the overall orthodontic burden of care for these patients in Bangladesh.
Objective: The aim of the study was the evaluation of orthodontic care burden for patients treated in the comprehensive cleft and craniofacial center of Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery. This study aimed to better understand to induce a critical evaluation of orthodontic treatment in patient with CLP including
orthodontic appliances. This observation focuses on the orthodontic assistance that patients will need to be provided for their better aesthetic outcome.
Material and Methods: Data were collected from 31 consecutive cleft patients who had finished orthodontic treatment between September 2017 and April 2023 at comprehensive cleft and craniofacial center, Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery. The following information was recorded in a data collection table for each patient, patient demographics; cleft diagnosis, orthodontic appliances used, duration of orthodontic appliances wear.
Results: Cleft lip and palate patient required a mean duration of treatment of 2.87 years (range = o.8 - 4.9 years) in order to complete their treatment. All 31 patients required fixed appliance treatment, on average time required 1.9 years (range = 0.8- 3.6 years) but among 31 patient removable orthodontic appliance was required for 17 patients and their mean was 1.3 years (range = 0.6 – 2.4 years). For the UCLP patients the mean time of orthodontic treatment was 3.1 years (range = 1- 4.8 years) and for BCLP patients the mean time of orthodontic treatment was 3.8 years (range = 0.8- 4.9 years).
Conclusion: CLP is considerable orthodontic burden of care to patients and their guardians, which they must be informed of before commencement of orthodontic treatment. To reduce the burden of orthodontic treatment need to creation of a centers of excellence for tremendous benefits of CLP patient.
