Production and Marketing Problems of Milk in Kanyakumari District

Introduction     A dairy is a place where handling of milk products is done and technology  refers  to  the  application  of  scientific  knowledge  for practical  purposes.    The  dairy  industry  is  of  crucial  importance  to India.  The country is the world is the largest milk producer, accounting for more than 13 percent of world’s total milk production.  It is the world’s largest consumer of dairy products, consuming almost 100 percent  of  its  milk  production.    In  India,  more  than  80  percent  of the cattle population in rural areas and about 76 percent of the rural population is contributing towards milk production.   Kanyakumari  district  is  primarily  an  agriculture  district  with  a sizable population depending on food crops and commercial crops. Dairy  farming  plays  an  important  role  in  generating  employment, income  and  capital  storage,  apart  from  and  improving  household nutrition in this district.
