Morphometric analysis of Ape Cave (WA,USA): Comprehensive Supplementary Material
Authors/Creators
Description
The files presented here serve as supplementary material for the paper Morphometric Analysis of Ape Cave Lava Tube: A Realistic and Complex Terrestrial Analogue for Lunar Exploration currently submitted for publication. The files provided here aim to complement the study by offering a detailed resource for understanding and further analyzing the Ape Cave's morphometry. The material includes the following:
- Morphometric analysis of Ape Cave lava tube (2024).ipynb: this Jupyter notebook includes a set of Python functions designed to extract cross-sections and calculate morphometric parameters (e.g., maximum XY, maximum Z, width, height, area, and perimeter) from a high-resolution 3D LiDAR-derived model of Ape Cave lava tube in WA, USA. Each function contains a brief explanation and is organized into steps for enhanced clarity and usability.
The inputs for this code are 3D models in .obj format but other formats compatible with the Python package trishmesh can be used. We have included a sample portion of Ape Cave's model (Part3.obj) for testing purposes. Users can run the provided code with this sample model to gain a hands-on understanding of its functionality. While the functions have been designed for this specific dataset, the methodology can be applied to other lava tube systems by adapting the code to account for different axis orientations or specific morphometric needs. This Python code was originally developed by the first author/project leader, Sarai Montañez Muñoz, with enhancements to functionality and structure provided by OpenAI's ChatGPT. - Morphometric analysis of Ape Cave (2024).blend: this file is compatible with the open-source software Blender (Blender) and includes:
- Ape Cave 3D model (version 1.0)
- Ape Cave 3D model divided into 7 parts/chunks
- Elongation path obtained for each part/chunk using the Python code
- Cross-sections (1,414) obtained from the Python code for each part/chunk
- Morphometric Analysis of Ape Cave - Detailed (2024).xlsx: Excel file containing the detailed morphometretric characteristics for each of the 1,414 cross-sections. These properties include parameters such as cross-sectional width, height, area, perimeter, aspect ratio and circular compactness. Some of the parameters obtained from the Python code were compared with infomation obtained from Blender and the results are presented in this file.
- Morphometric Analysis of Ape Cave - Summary (2024).xlsx: this second file summarizes the morphometric paramers used for the manuscript Morphometric Analysis of Ape Cave Lava Tube: A Realistic and Complex Terrestrial Analogue for Lunar Exploration currently submitted for publication. In addition, it provides the resulting clustering classification obtained for the 1,414 cross-sections.
