Title: Advancing Equity in Cancer Prevention: Highlights from the Year 2 CUPID Training School
In September, the Year 2 CUPID Training School took place in Prague, marking a significant step forward in tackling the barriers faced by people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (PWIDD) in accessing cancer prevention resources. This event united individuals, families, and professionals to explore innovative strategies that promote equitable healthcare access and challenge systemic disparities in cancer prevention.
At the heart of the Training School were three key objectives aimed at driving meaningful change:
1. Empowering Through Knowledge Acquisition
Participants, both in person and online, used easy-to-read presentations to gain a comprehensive understanding of evidence-based practices tailored to the unique needs of PWIDD. The Training School embraced a co-production approach, fostering collaboration among healthcare providers, advocates, and individuals with disabilities. This inclusive framework ensured that PWIDD and their supporters had a central role in delivering and discussing cancer prevention solutions that reflected their specific needs and challenges.
2. Breaking Down Barriers
By addressing systemic inequalities, the Training School sought to cultivate an environment of inclusivity and equity in healthcare. The focus was on identifying and overcoming obstacles that prevent PWIDD from accessing vital cancer prevention services, ensuring these resources are accessible and responsive to all.
3. Promoting Better Outcomes
The ultimate goal was to improve the quality of life for PWIDD by equipping them and their communities with the tools and knowledge needed to advocate for and implement effective cancer prevention strategies. Through its innovative and collaborative efforts, the CUPID Training School is a model for how healthcare systems can become more inclusive, equitable, and effective for everyone. This milestone in Prague represents a crucial step toward improving health outcomes and quality of life for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and cancer prevention interventions.
