TEM Kikuchi Sphere Models (HCP)

  • 1. ROR icon University of Manchester

Description

These 3D models represent the three-dimensional Kikuchi bands observed in hexagonal (HCP) materials in transmission electron microscopy. Intended both for education and as a visualisation aid, they include all principal basal, prismatic and pyramidal bands (modelled using the lattice parameters for alpha-zirconium).

The versions included are;

  • A 'solid' opaque version (with a void in the centre for reduced material cost)
  • A 'hollow' skeletonised version (with a hexagonal prism suspended at the centre, to represent the HCP unit cell).

These have been test-printed on a Bambu Labs A1 Mini 3d printer, using PLA through a stainless steel 0.4mm nozzle. The extrusion setting is '0.08mm Extra Fine' as per the specifications in Bambu Studio.

Print settings (Solid):

  • Recommended infill: 5-10% (gyroid)
  • Wall thickness: 5 loops
  • Supports? None
  • Print time: 17 hours
  • Filament cost: 176g (58m)

Print settings (Hollow):

  • Recommended infill: 100% (rectilinear) for sphere halves, 5-10% (gyroid) for unit cell and support rods.
  • Wall thickness: 5 loops
  • Supports? Tree (Organic)
  • Print time: 18 hours
  • Filament cost: 156g (51m)
