Description
Blockchain came into the global scene in the early 2010s as the technology behind Bitcoin, the world's first decentralized digital currency. Quite soon it became clear that this secure technology would become a powerful force in impacting society at large by solving many of the challenges it is faced with. As the first important use case for blockchain, digital currencies with their powerful consensus mechanisms brought concerns about sustainability. While not without merit, these concerns are now being addressed by a significant research community to facilitate sustainable cryptocurrency ecosystems.
Even more remarkable, however, is the emergence of new use cases in which blockchain/DLT technologies are directly contributing to the promotion of sustainability in many fields, such as food supply chains and electric distribution grids. As another example, blockchain offers excellent solutions to regulate carbon credit transactions and their allocation, and improve carbon offset project management.
European experts addressing these kinds of challenges in various Standard Development Organisations (e.g. ISO, CEN-CENELEC, IEC) came together in this webinar to present how they are supporting the EU in ensuring that sustainability considerations are brought to the table in the definition of new standards.
