1 ALPMEMA: - Alpine Mountain Hay Meadow Management D 25 Collection of tested playful approaches suited for scenario processes

Description

The overall goal of this deliverable is to provide a collection of playful approaches that can serve as a preparatory basis and decision support for the ALPMEMA scenario process. It is based on a structured review and analysis of literature and game directories of already published and (play)tested approaches and methods within the field of scenario-planning, anticipatory governance and creative futuring.
Research shows the shortcomings of traditional scenario approaches, which focus strongly on cognitive approaches and scientific methods, while underestimating emotional aspects and imagination for future processes. Evidence from the field of anticipatory climate governance shows that playful approaches or serious games can combine cognitive and emotional dimensions and stimulate creative imagination. As serious games are too complex and time-consuming to be fully integrated into the single-day ALPMEMA participatory scenario workshop, it is possible to integrate selected playful approaches or game elements to make it a game-like experience. This is partly because participatory scenario processes share some basic similarities with games, such as being voluntary, rule-based, providing space for creativity and having a limited time frame.
A review of the scientific literature revealed a lack of research on how concrete playful approaches can be integrated into participatory scenario development. As a starting point to fill this gap, two game directories were screened to select serious games or gameful and playful approaches dealing with foresight, scenarios or at least gameful/playful learning. The screening resulted in 26 items which are presented in this deliverable and characterised in terms of: content, learning experience, rules and mechanics, roles, scale, timeframe, debriefing, digitisation, number of players, duration and licensing.
From these games and additional literature, a number of underlying game mechanics and characteristics can be derived that proved useful in game governance contexts. These mechanics/ characteristics are: immersive experience, levity, complexity, game/motivational affordances, action- consequence feedback, flow experience, representation, level playing field, open-endedness, internalization of motivation, reflection/transformative learning, emotional involvement, shared understanding of facts, shared understanding of values, commitment to solution finding, social capital, sense of ownership/self-organisation, and transference of learning.
In summary, this deliverable provides a tested collection of game elements, mechanics, and motivational affordances that can be used to adapt participatory scenario approaches and make them a more gamelike experience. The mapped collection serves as input and inspiration for the next tasks and deliverables in WP 4 for the design and implementation of the Scenario workshops in the ALPMEMA project.
