ARCHIVE - Open Science "Dynamic Convergence" Workshop - Lightning talks
Description
Open Science Dynamic Convergence Workshop - September 2024, Washington DC
The Open Research Community Accelerator (ORCA), in collaboration with CERN and UNESCO and with the participation of NASA and the National Science Foundation, organized the "Dynamic Convergence" Workshop on Open Science, held on September 18-19, 2024, in Washington, DC.
Lightning talks
The Lightning talks at the Open Science Workshop offered participants a 5-minute glimpse into promising and successful projects. Each presenter introduced the scope and purpose of their work, highlighting outcomes and impact when possible. With a focus on collaboration, projects were asked to share how others can participate in their initiatives, and if they are actively seeking specific expertise or resources.
The talks were organized following the three tracks of the workshop:
-
Engagement: how can we bring more and more diverse people and organizations into open science?
-
Coordination: how can we promote collaboration by making workflows and sharing more efficient in open science?
-
Acceleration: how can we speed the transition to open-by-design using evidence-based learnings and better tools and practices?
All slides can be accessed as files attached to this record, except for Karthik Ram's slides, which are available online at https://inundata.org/talks/orca/

Speakers Track 1: Engagement
Laura Trouille, Zooniverse / Adler Planetarium / Northwestern University
Laura is VP of Science Engagement at the Adler Planetarium in Chicago and PI for Zooniverse and has led Adler’s participatory science efforts since 2015. Zooniverse.org, the world’s largest platform for people-powered research, is a collaboration between Adler, the University of Oxford, the University of Minnesota, millions of volunteers, and hundreds of researchers around the world. Laura was previously jointly appointed between Northwestern University and the Adler as an astronomer (with a focus on supermassive black holes) and science-education researcher (with a focus on computational thinking in K-12 STEM education).
Simine Vazire, MetaMelb Lab
Simine Vazire is a professor in the Melbourne School of Psychological Sciences at the University of Melbourne. She has two lines of research. One examines people's self-knowledge of their personality and behaviour and another examines the individual and institutional practices and norms in science, and the degree to which these norms encourage or impede scientific self-correction. She co-founded the Society for the Improvement of Psychological Science (SIPS) and she is Editor in Chief of Psychological Science.
Noor Johnson and Roberta Turraq Glenn-Borade, ELOKA
Noor Johnson is a research scientist at the National Snow and Ice Data Center, University of Colorado Boulder. She leads the Exchange for Local Observations and Knowledge of the Arctic (ELOKA), a network of Arctic Indigenous communities and organizations spearheading research projects on environmental change, cultural knowledge transmission, and language preservation. Her broader research interests focus on environmental knowledge production and mobilization and social and environmental justice issues in contemporary environmental governance.
Roberta Tuurraq Glenn-Borade is a Coordinator and Liaison for the Alaska Arctic Observatory and Knowledge Hub (AAOKH or ‘A-OK’) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. AAOKH works to share Indigenous Knowledge and observations as a member of the ELOKA network. Roberta’s role includes project coordination and analysis of environmental observations to identify seasonal observing themes. She also helps AAOKH develop and maintain strong relationships with partner communities. Roberta is Iñupiaq and was born and raised in Utqiaġvik, Alaska.
Speakers Track 2: Coordination
Kathleen Fitzpatrick, Michigan State University / Knowledge Commons
Kathleen Fitzpatrick is Interim Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies at Michigan State University. Prior to assuming this role, she was Director of Digital Humanities and founding director of Mesh Research, a center focused on the future of digital scholarly communication. She is project director of Knowledge Commons, an open-access, open-source network serving more than 42,000 scholars and practitioners across the disciplines and around the world. Her most recent book, Leading Generously: Tools for Transformation, will be released by Hopkins Press in October 2024. She is president of the board of directors of the Educopia Institute.

Malcolm is a founding member of the UK reproducibility Network Supervisory Board; Professor of Neurology and Translational Neurosciences and co-Director of Edinburgh Neuroscience. UKRN has a tripartite structure - Institutional members, Local Network Leads, and Stakeholders - and now involves 41 Institutional members and 80 Local Network Leads. We produce various materials to promote reproducibility in general, including initiatives to promote Open Research; and hold funding from Research England to develop, deploy and evaluate strategies to increase the uptake of open research. The UKRN model has now been adopted internationally, with 20 national RNs across 5 continents.
Ting Xu, Chinese Open Science Network
Ting Xu is an executive committee member of the Chinese Open Science Network (COSN), a grassroots organization established in 2016 to promote Open Science within Chinese-speaking research communities and to connect them with the global international Open Science movement. COSN organizes a range of Open Science events, including talks, tutorials, journal clubs, translation projects, and panel discussions on research and career-related topics. In her research role, she is the director of the Center for Integrative Developmental Neuroscience at the Child Mind Institute, where she focuses on brain evolution across species, normal brain development, and the alterations linked to mental health disorders.
