Description
This poster was presented at the GA4GH (Global Alliance for Genomics and Health) Plenary held in Melbourne in September 2024.
Poster abstract:
The proliferation of human genomics datasets in Australia holds untapped research potential but data remains difficult to access for the benefit of biomedical research. GUARDIANS will address this national predicament over the next four years, by building infrastructure using tools and frameworks aligned with international best practice including GA4GH standards and ELSI considerations in the Australian context.
GUARDIANS is an initiative funded via Bioplatforms Australia as part of the Australian Government Department of Education’s National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS). This substantial program will be delivered by a partnership of major Australian human genomics research and infrastructure organisations, coordinated by Australian BioCommons. Project guidelines are drawn from the NCRIS Roadmap and NAGIM Implementation Recommendations and build on the learnings of past work, such as BioCommons’ Human Genomes Platform Project, to ensure we hit the ground running with a focus on delivery.
Our ambition is to help researchers easily discover, access and analyse human genomics research data stored in Australia. To achieve this we will deliver multiple data commons supporting flagship collections from key areas of unmet need. We will build the foundations for a national human genome repository. We will link the components of our deliverables using a shared identity and access management system for ease of access and improved security. We will run selected innovation pilots to ensure we stay at the cutting edge of developments in genomic data sharing. Most of all, to ensure sustainability of the components we build we will provide technical expertise, leadership, support and training.
GUARDIANS is a national project working across multiple components towards ensuring Australian human genomic data can be easily and securely accessed by Australian researchers. We are at the beginning of an exciting period and look forward to showcasing the services we deliver.
