Description

One of the possibilities to better understand the experience of burden in the teaching profession is to explore the typology of their behaviour and experience, and thus, if necessary, a possible intervention. To explore the experience of stress, coping and burnout, we used standardized questionnaires: Perceived Stress Scale, briefCOPE and Teacher Burnout Scale. 214 Slovak teachers from various primary and secondary schools and career phases participated in the research. We subjected the data to descriptive and bivariate analysis. To verify the hypothesis about the existence of typology, we used the K-means cluster analysis. The association between the level of stress experienced and burnout among teachers was confirmed. As pressure increases, the ability to adopt an adaptive coping strategy (focused on problem-solving or focused on emotions) decreases, and the tendency to prefer avoidant strategies increases, on the contrary. All the participants can be classified into one of the three types we diagnosed: those, who can´t handle it, hardy and frustrated (on the way to burnout). The results show a necessity to work more and systematically with in-service teachers to eliminate the negative impact of stress and burnout on their personal life, health, and profession.
