Leading with Virtue: Theological Insights into Ethical Business Leadership

  • 1. Open Christian University

Description

This paper argues that incorporating virtue ethics, particularly those rooted in Christian theology, is crucial for ethical business leadership. Drawing on the works of Thomas Aquinas and Augustine, the paper explores how theological virtues like humility, integrity, courage, and love can shape leadership styles and foster ethical decision-making. Illustrative case studies of Truett Cathy (Chick-fil-A), David Green (Hobby Lobby), and William Booth (The Salvation Army) demonstrate the positive impact of integrating faith and business principles. The paper also addresses potential conflicts between profit motives and ethical leadership, as well as criticisms from a secular perspective. It concludes with practical recommendations for integrating virtue ethics into business education and leadership development programs, emphasizing the need to cultivate a culture of ethical behavior within organizations.
