Description
Background: The management of plastic waste is a major challenge in Chad.
Plastics are ubiquitous in landfills due to their widespread use in various sectors.
This study aims to assess the prevalence and categorize the plastics found in
landfills in Chad. Methods: A quantitative and qualitative analysis of plastic
waste was conducted in several urban and rural landfills in Chad. Data were
collected over a six-month period using waste sorting and weighing methods. The
selected landfills include those in N'Djamena, Moundou, and Sarh. Results:
Plastics account for approximately 20-30% of urban solid waste in Chad. The
main sources of plastic waste include food packaging, plastic bottles, and plastic
bags. The most common types of plastics are polyethylene (PE), polyethylene
terephthalate (PET), polypropylene (PP), and polystyrene (PS). Conclusion: The
management of plastic waste in Chad requires urgent interventions to reduce its
environmental impact. Policies for the reduction, reuse, and recycling of plastics
must be implemented to mitigate this growing problem.
