Description
This article investigates the relationship between hemodialysis and the physical and functional capacity of patients with chronic kidney disease, considering the increasing global prevalence of this condition. Conducted at a hemodialysis center in eastern Maranhão, the study involved 96 patients, with final analysis on 90 of them, using tools such as the International Physical Activity Questionnaire and functionality tests from the protocol developed by the Latin American Development Group in Maturity. The results indicate that, although essential, hemodialysis negatively impacts the autonomy and functional capacity of the patients, limiting their daily activities and contributing to a more sedentary lifestyle. Data analysis revealed a significant need for effective strategies to improve the physical and functional capacity of these patients, suggesting that exercise programs integrated into treatment could enhance quality of life and reduce morbidity and mortality associated with chronic kidney disease. It concludes that it is important to implement personalized adaptations in healthcare for these patients, as well as the implementation of health policies that consider local and demographic specificities for a more effective and inclusive treatment of chronic kidney disease.
