Description
To estimate monthly mass changes of the GIS from January 2003 to August 2023 we have used (1) radar altimetry data from ESA's Earth Explorer CryoSat-2 mission (Wingham et al., 2006) from November 2010 to August 2023, (2) radar altimetry data from ESA's Environmental Satellite (Envisat) data from August 2002 to March 2012, (3) laser altimetry data from Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation/Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (ICESat/GLAS) data from February 2003 to September 2009 (Zwally et al., 2014), (4) laser altimetry data from Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2) data from October 2018 to August 2023 (Smith et al., 2021), and (5) laser altimetry data from NASA's Operation IceBridge Airborne Topographic Mapper (ATM) flights from April 2002 to April 2019 (Studinger et al., 2020).
Here, we provide:
(1) Monthly Elevation changes (in water equivalent) during 2003-2023
(2) Monthly Elevation changes (in ice equivalent) during 2003-2023
(3) Monthly Elevation changes due to elastic Vertical land motion during 2003-2023
(4) Monthly Elevation changes due to Firn compaction during 2003-2023
(5) Vertical land motion due to Glatial Isostatic Adjustment
(6) Digital Elevation Models from the Greenland Ice Mapping Project (GIMP) (Howat et al., 2015)
(7) Geoid height above reference ellipsoid, eigen-6c4 (Forste et al 2014).
We provide netcdf files for montly elevation chages.
We provide geotiff files for mean elevation chages during 2003-2023.
Notes
Methods
We have used radar altimetry data from CryoSat-2, ENVISAT, ICESat, ICESat-2 and NASA's ATM flights to estimate monthly mass changes of the GrIS from January 2003 to Auhust 2023. We applied corrections for the Earth's immediate elastic response to contemporary ice mass changes and a correction for glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) using a recent model entitled "GNET-GIA" (Khan et al., 2016). We converted the observed ice volume changes to mass changes and considered firn compaction model (Khan et al 2022).
