Description
This study aimed to analyze the effects of age, period, and cohort on suicides among women by hanging, strangulation, suffocation, firearm use, and self-poisoning in different Brazilian regions from 1980 to 2019. This ecological time-trend study employed estimable functions to estimate APC models, facilitated by the Epi library of the R statistical program, version 4.2.1.
Methods
The Mortality Information System (SIM) exhibits varying quality in death certification, coverage, and completeness of variables among Brazilian regions. Notably, there is a high proportion of death records with an undetermined underlying cause and significant underreporting, particularly in the North and Northeast regions [41-44]. Faced with this, we chose to rectify death records for both poor certification and underreporting. Since there is no consensus in the literature regarding the best method to correct for the poor certification of suicides [30-31,33], we adapted the approach proposed by Garcia et al. [45] in six steps, as outlined in S1Table. The results of the stages of the death record correction process are presented in S2 Table.
