CLARIN Café: Of Users and Infrastructures

This Clarin Café presents the results of the project "The Emerging Landscape of Digital Work Practices in the Humanities in the Context of the European Research Infrastructures DARIAH and CLARIN." This project revealed current trends in the use of digital tools and methods by researchers in the humanities and social sciences (SSH). The findings are based on a web survey conducted from October 2022 to January 2023 and six focus groups held between November 2022 and January 2023. Three research groups collaborated on this project: two institutes from the Athena Research and Innovation Center (the Institute for Language and Speech Processing/ILSP and the Information Management Systems Institute/IMSI) as well as the Academy of Athens.

The following conclusions can be drawn from the analysis:

• The shortcomings in available digital content are evident, highlighting the need to improve access to data through expanding digital repositories and promoting a culture of sharing.
• There is limited use of standards and digital tools, as well as fragmented implementation of standardized digital workflows.
• There is a clear need for training and continuous updates in new digital tools and methodologies.
• The pandemic has accelerated the digital transformation of the workforce.

The presentation focuses on key highlights of the research, the published results on Zenodo (https://zenodo.org/records/7973681 , https://zenodo.org/records/10797453 ), the research methodology, and how well user needs are being met with examples from VLO and CLARIN:EL. Future ideas based on the findings are also showcased.

The primary goal of this event is to highlight lessons learned and discuss the implications of these findings for future research infrastructure design and improvement.
