Description
A comprehensive literature review was conducted for Chapter 1 of the IPBES business and biodiversity assessment, which provides a common framework for all chapters of this assessment. The review process involved multiple approaches, including a systematic review of academic and gray literature sources, a focused institutional document analysis of IPBES' assessment reports, and targeted non-systematic searches of specific bodies of literature. The aim was to identify interlinkages with existing and upcoming IPBES assessments, clarify key concepts and definitions related to biodiversity and nature, explore different business typologies, and understand the evolution of business engagement with nature by examining various impacts, dependencies, risks, opportunities, and enabling elements that support positive outcomes of business activities on biodiversity. The review also incorporated socio-cultural and Indigenous knowledge perspectives on business and biodiversity. Expert elicitation and brainstorming were used to complement the literature search. This report details the process used to complete this chapter’s literature review.
