Sugar sweetened beverages (SBBs) or sugar-sweetened carbonated drinks are drinks with high amounts of added sugar and additional calorie intake and contain little or no nutrients at all. The addition of sugar to this drink has been known to cause several health risks, including obesity, diabetes, and mental health problems, because this drink contains sugar and high fructose corn syrup which increases the glycemic load of the diet and serum triglycerides, and causes insulin resistance. Several studies have also shown a risk of mental health problems in populations who consume SSBs continuously, but there has been no systematic review regarding this. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the relationship between SSBs consumption and mental health problems in the adult population. This research uses a systematic review method. Based on a literature search, 152 articles were found from two databases, namely Pubmed and Sciencedirect. After screening based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, there were 5 eligible articles according to the research context. Based on the results of the article review, it was found that not all types of SSBs can increase mental health risks. SSBs containing fruit have a tendency to reduce depression because they contain antioxidants. Apart from that, SSB which contains caffeine can also prevent depression. SSBs containing fruit or natural fruit or vegetable juice have a tendency to reduce depression due to their antioxidant content. The caffeine content can also prevent depression. Based on the results of the article review, it was found that the risk of depression is associated with an increased risk of obesity and diabetes in people who consume SSBs continuously. Based on the results of the literature review, it was found that mental health risks due to consumption of SSBs were associated with an increased risk of diabetes and obesity. Not all types of SSBs drinks have an effect on increasing depression, especially SSBs which contain sugar and caffeine. However, the risk of diabetes, obesity, and insulin resistance from consuming SSBs increases the risk of developing depression.
