Description

1. Phaonia tuguriorum tuguriorum (Scopoli)

“ Phaonia sordidisquama Stein ”; Tiensuu 1938: 8 (Madeira); Frey 1949: 45 (Madeira); Pont 2008: 334 (Madeira). Misidentifications.

“ Phaonia canariensis Villeneuve ”; Pont 2008: 334 (Madeira). Misidentification.

Taxonomic note. Tiensuu (1938) misidentified the present species as Phaonia sordidisquama (presently treated as a Canarian subspecies of P. trimaculata, see below) based on long series of specimens from two localities in Madeira. A reexamination of specimens from both localities (see above) revealed that they all belong to P. tuguriorum tuguriorum. The Madeiran record of Phaonia canariensis (presently treated as a Canarian subspecies of P. tuguriorum, see below) by Pont (2008) also refers to the nominal subspecies of P. tuguriorum.

Material examined. MADEIRA: [MZH, OUMNH] Caramujo, 1250m, 5♂ 6‒14.viii.1935 (O. Lundblad); Rabaçal, 2♀ 17.vii–4.viii.1935 (O. Lundblad), 1♂, 1♀ 10.vii.1990 (M. Báez); Faja da Nogueira, c. 750m, laurisilva, 1♀ 20.xi.1980 (H. Enghoff & O. Martin).

Distribution. The nominal subspecies is widely distributed in the Mediterranean region and is here also recorded from Madeira.
