Description
This is a recording of the story about two ancestors of two neighboring clans, who got into a fight about saratoga fish (Scleropages jardinii) and bushfowls (Orange-footed Scrubfowl). The story explains why the two groups of people, the Mayawa from Masu and the Sagara from Garaita, have settled away from each other and why they do not intermarry. It is a well-known story amongst the people of Rouku village, Western Province, Papua New Guinea. The story was told by Abia Bai.
The dataset includes:
- the audio file (.wav)
- the video file (.mpeg)
- the interlinearised transcription file (.eaf)
The material was recorded by Christian Döhler as part of a language documentation project for his PhD. The project was located at the School of Culture, History and Language at the Australian National University, Canberra. For the most part it was funded by the DOBES project of the Volkswagen Foundation.
